Custom Car Covers Vs. Universal Car Covers

Mass-produced goods may come cheaper than custom produced goods, but they often entail more costs in the long run. Let us explain.

Mass produced goods seldom give you the satisfaction of a custom produced product. Take for example suits that are mass produced in certain sizes and are offered much cheaper as compared to the tailored one where the fabric has been pre-selected for durability and style. The former may have a jacket whose sleeves are an inch longer or the trousers whose length is an inch shorter. Besides, the mass produced clothes are often made up of patchwork materials where several pieces of the same fabric have been stitched up to serve as a one-piece textile.

The person who buys it in order to save a few dollars either ends up feeling withdrawn all the time or spends his/her good money, getting it ‘altered’ to his/her exact measurements. Besides, the ‘readymade’ suit gets ‘un-ready’ in a short while, either losing its color or its fit and needs replacement much earlier than the tailored stuff. Though it may be true in some cases that a penny saved is a penny earned, the interpretation does not hold much water in all cases.

Car covers are no exception.
The essential duty of a car cover is to protect the car against so many things that include the sun and the rain, both of which are perpetually damaging the finish of the lovely vehicle. Then there is the UV radiation, which is a silent adversary, slowly, and surely damaging and destroying the body of the vehicle and the lush interior too. Even unsuspecting members of the avian family can do much wrong to the car by leaving its dropping on the car’s water based paint that gets stained, coming in contact with its acidic residue.

In order to protect the car or the SUV from all such hazards, one needs a material that is durable enough to withstand the fury of the elements, soft enough to provide an abrasion-free touch to the car body, has UV inhibiting properties to ward off unwanted ultra violet rays, is provided with pores to ‘breath’ during precipitation and above all, one that is a close fit covering every corner, contour and flanks of the car or the SUV. The close fit is an absolute necessity as otherwise dirt and dust will penetrate through the odd-fitting car cover, rainwater will percolate through the seams if they are numerous, and UV rays will find fissures to gain entry into the interior of the vehicle and do the damage. And of course, a snug fit heightens the aesthetics of your parked car.

Universal or Semi-Custom Car Covers
Why do you need 100% custom made covers? Simple. Universal or semi-custom car covers are like those ‘Readymade’ suits that are mass produced, in around two or three sizes, and are supposed to suit all cars or SUVs, an objective that is absolutely unrealistic. A Universal or Semi-Custom Car Cover made for a Mercedes Benz C-class estate can never do any good to a Chevrolet Optra Magnum. It may be too tight at the top and too baggy at the bottom. Also, it may leave the Chevy’s built-in bumpers uncovered where UV radiation, moisture, rock, salt and snow will do their destructive work in right earnest. However, once their combined effects are successful and rust sets in, it is the beginning of the end of the Optra. This is what happens when you try to force a cover made for a particular brand of car onto another.

However, this concerns only half of the real trouble that Universal or Semi-Custom Car Covers create. Sadly enough, these covers often employ poor material that is neither durable nor properly treated with anti-UV layers to inhibit the progress of ultra violet rays into the interior of the vehicle as well as poor workmanship. In order to cut down cost, most Universal or Semi-Custom Car Covers are not made ‘breathable’, i.e. they are not equipped with innumerable micro-pores that are so very essential to allow the moisture during precipitation to vaporize by coming into contact with the outside air. Also, most semi-custom covers are made from patchwork fabric having too many seams from which rainwater starts leaking. It’s no wonder that these covers cost so much less than their superiors.

When it comes to Universal or Semi-Custom seat covers and dash covers, the situation is even grimmer. A badly fitting dash cover could hide from view some of the automatic light sensors while semi-custom seat cover could block the opening passage of the side opening air bag. Today’s cars are so fastidiously designed through appropriate programs run through computers, and each automaker opts for something ‘original’ that Semi-custom floor mats made for one particular model will either leave half the floorboard uncovered or may run on to the brake pedal.  As a matter of fact, the very word ’Semi-Custom’ is a misnomer. It’s like a medicine that is either a cure for a disease or not; but there cannot be a medicine that is a ‘semi-cure’.

Custom Car Covers
The answer to all these worries is a Custom Car Cover. They are a totally different story altogether. Custom car Covers are made following three basic principles, namely – Protection, Snugness and Attraction.

First, Custom Car Covers are made from materials that are pre-tested for durability, color fastness, UV-resistancy, breathabilty and user-friendly characteristics. Once these are ensured, skilled craftsmen are employed among facilities where automated tools and jigs help construct the cover with the aid of specially programmed computers utilizing CAD/CAM principle after obtaining accurate specifications from the automaker.

To keep the number of seams as low as possible, full length original materials are always used and patchwork materials are never entertained. Also, Custom Car covers are made for each individual model so that it fits the car or the SUV like a glove, leaving no portion extra tight to the point of bursting out or saggy enough not to reveal the superb bodylines of the designer car. The same is also true of Designer Seat Covers. In fact, Coverking is reputed to deal in custom seat covers that are so well made that people often take them as original covers as installed by the automaker. The secret behind such outstanding workmanship consist of two major input methods – both the men and the machines are attuned to such fine working schedule that nothing shorter than the best output will ever come out of it.

Since protecting the car is the principal job of the cover, the Custom Car Cover does it extremely well with the help of integrated computer software along with guidelines provided by the automaker. As for the snugness, it is the ingenuity of the maker who follows strictly the lines that the CAD/CAM program help depict on the monitor. Once these are stringently trailed, the admirable profile gradually takes shape and stitching starts.
